Stamford Advocate

  • Fishing in the area has been very good. Though still early, snapper blue fishing is getting better. The baby bluefish are still small but they are hungry. Striped bass, bluefish, porgy and fluke fishing are all going strong.
  • Five-year-old K.J. Conley and his dad, Kevin Sr., fished Holly Pond last week. Together they caught six striped bass measuring up to 26-inches and lots of small snappers. They were using sandworms for bait.
  • Linda St. George had a good day fishing in Stamford Harbor. She caught a 20-pound striped bass and a bunch of bluefish weighing between 8 and 10-pounds. All of the fish were taken on bunker chunks.
  • While drifting sandworms for striped bass in the waters between Darien and Norwalk, Charles Hurdy boated a 29-inch weakfish. He also caught and released several stripers.
  • Lucick Jarnutowska had a good day fishing at Cove Island. He caught and released six striped bass including one that measured 29-inches. All of the fish were taken on clams.
  • Gary Turco fished at Sound Reef and caught lots of fish using clam chum and a squid and spearing combo. He caught 24 porgies and a pair of short black sea bass.
  • Capt. Lou, master of the boat "Millie" fished off Captains Island last week. He boated a couple of fluke including one that weighed 8-pound, 10-ounces. He was using a squid and spearing combo.
  • Tod's Point has been producing lots of nice fluke. Justin Gaccione, 11, and Christian Bray, 12, caught five fluke weighing between 2 and 4-pounds. They were using squid and spearing and a bucktail rig.
  • Nick Mitrione and Mike Loic caught seven summer flounder at Tod's Point. Their fluke weighed between 4 and 6-pounds and were taken on squid and spearing.
  • Mike Noyes of Sportsman's Den caught some fluke while fishing off Tod's Point. His fish weighed between 2 and 5-pounds and were taken on a green Spro Bucktail sweetened with squid and spearing.
  • Tuna fishing is also starting to explode. Several area anglers went to "The Tails" to fish last week and they all came home with coolers full of fresh tuna. The crew of "Upper Deck" boated six yellow fin tuna and lost a couple of others while chunking at Fish Tails. Their largest tuna tipped the scales at 80-pounds. John Sweeney and Steve Cohen trolled a Green Machine through the Tails. They hooked a 45-pound yellow fin and a 50-pound albacore. Mike Cerbone and the crew of "Summertime Blues" fished east of Fish Tails. They caught a white marlin, a blue marlin, two mahi mahi and 11 yellow fin tuna including one that weighed 60.90-pounds. The fish were caught while jigging various baits.Doug Van Duesen boated an 80-pound yellow fin and lost a large white marlin while trolling a spreader rig. He was also fishing at Fish Tails.
  • On the freshwater scene, the folks at Rudy's Tackle Barn reported that one of their customers made an unusual sighting while fishing for brown trout in the Byram River. The unnamed angler spotted a "very large" river otter chasing and catching a big brown trout.
  • Fred Zeppa traveled up to Kent to do some carp fishing. He caught a pair of carp weighing 8 and 10-pounds. No other details were available. (written by Martin Armstrong, Stamford Advocate).
