On The Water 2/17/06

It’s never over in the Thames. It’s a matter of picking your days. Wait for incoming storms, overcast days and mild spells. Fishing can be good during warming rains, especially after dark this time of year. At best you will have to work to rack up any kinds of numbers from now till the water temperature rises over 50 degrees some time in April. If weather conditions warm early, count on it turning on some time early in April, but for sure by mid-April with the spring bite.
There have been reports of a few white perch being caught by vertical fishing with bait or small jigs, right off the town docks in Norwich. Prior to the storm there was a big northern pike caught at the Greenville Dam by a striper fisherman trying to jump the gun on the great spring fishing we will be experiencing in roughly two months.
There have been some yellow perch caught at Hamburg Cove and other backwaters on the Connecticut River during the warm spell last week, but no reports since. Same thing for salmon fishing below the Derby Dam on the Housatonic. No one has done anything with salmon in the Shetucket in a number of weeks.
Also no word on any sea-run trout being caught from the coastal streams, but I’d bet there are some fish around to play with."
